Human Factors Course Descriptions

  • The workshop is in compliance with Transport Canada, FAA and EASA 145  requirements and is FAA IA renewal approved.
  • Additionally, we provide eight phases of recurrent human factors training that further explore various aspects of error prevention strategies in aviation.

Objective

To equip aviation managers, technicians and flight crews with the skills necessary to enhance safety, teamwork and efficiency in the workplace, and therefore, reduce aviation related errors.

Description

The initial two-day, 16-hour workshop has been developed to give aviation professionals insight as to the human element that affects their judgment in the workplace. Central to the workshop is an in-depth discussion and examination of the Dirty Dozen, a variety of human factors such as complacency, distraction, fatigue, and stress, which all affect an individual’s decision making process. Through behavioral analysis and actual case studies, the workshop will demonstrate how safety nets, or countermeasures, can be instituted by the managers, technicians and flight crews to prevent incidents and accidents due to human error.

Objective

To examine the human role in the chain of events that cause an aviation occurrence and develop ways to prevent or lessen the seriousness of the occurrence.

Description

The one-day, 8-hour workshop includes a brief review of Phase I and the Dirty Dozen then moves on to study additional factors that affect a person’s judgment in the workplace. In this session we focus on attitude, company culture, norms and verbal and written communication as human factors that affect judgment.  Once again, we study the safety nets and countermeasures that are necessary in a workplace to ensure that it is free of errors leading to aviation occurrences.

Objective

To explore the role of senior aviation personnel in error prevention and to give the leaders and mentors of an organization insight and tools which allow them to be effective mentors.

Description

This one-day, 8-hour refresher course is aimed at aviation mentors who have already been introduced to error prevention through the Phase I and II workshops. Participants are taught how to be leaders and mentors by inspiring and motivating others to succeed in their positions. Discussion topics include goal setting, communication, conflict resolution, team building and strategies for error prevention.

Objective

To provide aviation managers, technicians and flight crews with the tools necessary to understand human behavior, address conflict, prioritize time and ensure integrity.

Description

This one-day, 8-hour workshop is designed to give employees and their managers the skills to work together through pressure, differences in personalities and deal with conflict. In this workshop we will examine the role of integrity in the development of safety nets to avoid disastrous errors. The participants will be exposed to the error investigation tool “MEDA” Maintenance Error Decision Aid.

Objective

To explore the organizational role in error prevention by providing participants with problem solving, risk management, listening and teamwork strategies for the workplace.

Description

This one-day, 8-hour workshop incorporates key points from all four preceding workshops, which results in a full-circle analysis of Human Factors error prevention. After a comprehensive review of key error prevention strategies, this workshop will take an organizational approach to problem solving, risk management and teamwork in the aviation environment. An emphasis on listening styles and strategies will provide participants with the skills necessary to work towards total error prevention within their organization.

Objective

To examine the nature of a multi-generational workforce and its role in a culture of accountability and management excellence.

Description

This one-day, 8-hour workshop will outline the characteristics and motivators of the four key generational groups in today’s workforce: Veterans, Baby Boomers, Generation X and Generation Y. A discussion of benefits and challenges associated with a multi-generational work team will be followed by an introduction of strategies for maximizing these working relationships. Accountability and best leadership practices are studied as the two cornerstones of management excellence in the organization.

Objective

To understand why, in our controlled environment, we still make mistakes.

Description

This one-day workshop will illustrate the requirement for synergy between management and employees to create a culture that will foster appropriate workplace attitudes.  The focus of the workshop is to provide the attendee with an understanding on how a number of human factors such as fatigue, communication, stress and company culture will affect the attitude of an employee.

Objective

To understand procedural failures despite our heavily structured work environments.

Description

This is a one-day study on the risks associated with failing to follow performance standards already in place by regulatory, manufacturer’s and operator’s procedures.  We will examine the importance of making procedures engaging and creating a culture of accountability.  Effective countermeasures will be identified to ensure procedures are followed.
